PILGRIMAGE Bratslav
The grave of Rabbi Nathan Sternhartz
Natan Shterngarz Ben Naftali Herz, a native of Nemirov, became the closest and most beloved student of Rabbi Nachman Breslover.
It was Natan Sterngarz who deciphered, recorded, arranged and printed all the works of Rabbi Nachman, made a huge contribution to the popularization of Hasidism, and even initiated the annual pilgrimage of Breslov Hasids to Rabbi Nachman’s grave in Uman on the eve of Rosh Hashanah.
After the death of Rabbi Nachman, he became his heir, teacher and leader of the Hasidic movement.
Nathan Sterngarz died in 1844 in Bratslav, where he was buried. Among the graves of the Old Jewish Cemetery, the grave of Rabbi Natan Sternharts has been preserved.
The grave of Nathan Sternharts in Bratslav is a holy place for the Hasids, they believe that it is here that all their dreams will come true. The philosophy of this Hasidic religious trend is that the Tzadik (translated as sage) is God’s messenger on earth, he is a saint while alive, believers follow his instructions, and after death, according to beliefs, the Tzadik communicates directly with God.
Hasids believe that if you ask God for your cherished wishes at the grave of a sage, then God will surely hear them.
Nathan’s grave is located in Bratslav on a rocky hill, which offers an amazing view of the banks of the Southern Bug and the old mill, built by Jan Soliterman according to the design of the famous architect Władysław Horodetski.
70 wooden steps have been laid between the stones of the high Castle Mountain for easy access for people, and platforms with convenient handrails have been arranged.
The grave is guarded around the clock.
