In Uman, Foreigners' Documents Are Being Checked Ahead of Rosh Hashanah: What Immigration Officials Found
In Uman, on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, authorities stepped up document checks on foreign nationals and enforcement of immigration laws. A joint operation was carried out in the city by police, border guards, immigration service officers, and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). This was reported by the Migration Service of Kirovohrad and Cherkasy regions.
Israeli police officers stationed in Uman during the Hasidic pilgrimage also participated in the operation.
Hasidic pilgrims will celebrate Rosh Hashanah in Uman starting September 11. The largest number of foreign nationals arrives in the city just before the holiday begins, which is why the relevant agencies are operating on high alert.
The checks covered venues for religious events, areas where pilgrims are concentrated, and the routes they take through the city.
Law enforcement officers and State Migration Service (SMS) employees checked whether foreign nationals were complying with the rules for staying in Ukraine. Specifically, the focus was on identifying individuals who might be in the country illegally, have documentation issues, or be disrupting public order.
Since September 4, officers from the Uman Division of the Central-Southern Interregional Directorate of the State Migration Service have been operating under heightened security measures. During this time, they identified six Hasidic pilgrims who had violated immigration laws. A decision was made to forcibly return them. Two of them were also banned from entering Ukraine for a period of three years.
In addition, one Israeli citizen who arrived in Ukraine with a forged document was forcibly deported from the country.
One foreign national was also held administratively liable under Part 1 of Article 203 of the Code of Administrative Offenses for failing to register his place of residence in a timely manner. Furthermore, during the inspections, 26 temporary residence permits that had expired were confiscated.
Special attention was paid to preventive measures during the operation. Foreign nationals were briefed on the requirements of Ukraine’s administrative and criminal laws, the consequences of violations, and the need to comply with the rules governing their stay in the country.
Intensified efforts in Uman are ongoing. The Migration Service, in cooperation with law enforcement agencies, will continue to monitor compliance with migration laws and ensure the safe conduct of festive and religious events.
