For the second year in a row, additional trash cans have been installed in Uman near the Hasidic pilgrimage site

For the second year in a row, the “Uman Historical and Cultural Center” Charitable Foundation has installed additional trash cans in the area where Hasidic pilgrims gather. This year, they were placed on Turistiv Street—one of the locations where large numbers of pilgrims gather during Rosh Hashanah, according to the foundation’s press service.

The foundation notes that the decision to install additional trash cans was made based on the experience of previous years. During the mass pilgrimage, the strain on the area increases significantly, so it is important to create the conditions for maintaining cleanliness and order in advance.

The new trash bins were placed exactly where pilgrims need them most—near the main entrances to the celebration area and along the paths leading to the grave of Tzadik Rabbi Nachman.

For convenience and out of cultural sensitivity, the bins now feature inscriptions in Hebrew: “You are in a holy place; please dispose of your trash properly.”

This not only facilitates waste disposal but also serves as a reminder of one’s responsibility toward this sacred site.

As explained by Iryna Rybnytska, executive director of the charitable organization “Uman City Historical and Cultural Center Foundation,” the foundation already has practical experience with this type of work.

“For the second year in a row, we’ve been installing additional trash cans in the Hasidic pilgrimage area. Based on our experience from previous years, we’ve seen that when pilgrims arrive in large numbers, the strain on this area increases significantly. That’s why it’s important to ensure cleanliness, convenience, and order well in advance. This year, additional trash cans have been installed on Turistiv Street so that pilgrims have more opportunities to properly dispose of their trash,” noted Iryna Rybnytska.

According to her, maintaining cleanliness in the pilgrimage area is a shared responsibility of the organizers, city services, the community, and the pilgrims themselves.

“It is important to us that the pilgrimage area remains clean and orderly. Additional trash cans are a simple but much-needed solution that helps avoid the problems the city has faced in previous years. We want the pilgrims’ stay in Uman to be well-organized, and the strain on the city’s infrastructure to be reduced,” added Iryna Rybnytska.

The foundation emphasizes that installing additional trash cans is part of broader preparations for the pilgrimage period. This is not only about comfort but also about respect for the city, local residents, and the area, which holds significant spiritual meaning for Hasidic pilgrims.

Thousands of pilgrims traditionally arrive in Uman during Rosh Hashanah. That is why issues of cleanliness, safety, logistics, and spatial organization in the pilgrimage area require special attention.

The Charitable Organization “Uman Historical and Cultural Center Foundation” continues to work on initiatives that help make the pilgrims’ stay in the city more organized, safe, and comfortable.
