Pilgrims traveling to Uman via Poland were advised at the border on the best route to take

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has provided pilgrims traveling to Uman with recommendations on planning their route across the Polish-Ukrainian border. This is stated in a letter from the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, large groups of pilgrims traveling to Uman have been forced to use alternative routes every year. These routes often pass through Polish territory.

The Polish side urges pilgrims to select border crossing points in advance to reduce the risk of long waits at the border.

Where Poland recommends traveling

When returning from Uman after Rosh Hashanah, Polish authorities recommend using the following border crossings whenever possible:

• “Korchova”;
• “Budomierz.”

These routes are recommended as alternatives to the “Medika” border crossing, where repair work is currently underway.

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs asks that you avoid the “Medyka” border crossing if possible.

Due to modernization and limited capacity, choosing this crossing may result in waits lasting several hours.

The situation may be particularly challenging when pilgrims are returning from Uman.

Why you shouldn’t rely on just one route

Due to restrictions at the “Medyka–Shehyni” border crossing, some bus and truck traffic is already being rerouted to other border crossings.

In particular, increased traffic may be expected at:

• Malhovice;
• Kroscienko.

Therefore, pilgrims and carriers should have an alternative route and constantly monitor the situation at the border.

How the EES Might Affect Your Trip

The EES system has been in operation at the EU’s external borders since April 2026.

It involves registering travelers and collecting biometric data during the initial border check.

This may increase wait times at the border, especially when large groups of people arrive at the same time.

What Carriers Should Do

Carriers and tour operators should:

• determine the border crossing point in advance;
• avoid planning a route through “Medika” if other options are available;
• consider “Korchowa” and “Budomierz”;
• notify the Polish side about the groups;
• allow for extra time;
• warn pilgrims about possible lines.
