Peculiarities of pilgrimage during martial law
Every September thousands of Jews travel to Uman to celebrate Rosh Hashanah at the grave of a great spiritual leader, Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, may the memory of the righteous be a blessing.
Before his death, Rabbi Nachman commanded his disciples to visit his grave every year on Rosh Hashanah to pray there. Breslov chassidim consider it their duty to visit the grave of Rabbi Nachman on Rosh Hashanah at least once during their lifetime. Rosh Hashanah is one of the most spiritually intense and uplifting times of the year, and many people visit Uman to spend this this exalted holiday praying at Rabbi Nachman’s grave.
Maintaining a connection with one’s spiritual leader is one of the fundamental principles of Chassidism. Chassidim visit their Rebbes several times a year to seek inspiration and guidance. It is a long-held tradition that after their leader’s passing, his followers visit his grave instead. While visiting the graves of the spiritual leaders is widespread among Chassidim, Rabbi Nachman placed special emphasis on this practice.
