Protection of Jewish Cemeteries in Uman: The Parties Will Continue Consultations

News

Ukraine and representatives of the U.S. Jewish community will continue consultations on the preservation of historic burial sites and memorial areas in Uman.

This was discussed during a meeting between Ukraine’s First Deputy Minister of Culture Ivan Verbytsky and a delegation from the United Jewish Organization of Williamsburg and Northern Brooklyn.

Historic burial sites require proper protection

One of the main topics of the meeting was the preservation of Jewish cemeteries, burial sites, and other memorial sites in Uman.

The parties discussed their proper maintenance, as well as possible ways to improve the legal protection of historical and cultural sites that are of particular significance to the Jewish community.

The preservation of such sites is an important component of Ukraine’s international cooperation. This involves not only the protection of individual monuments but also respect for historical memory, religious traditions, and the people buried in this land.

Uman’s Special Significance for Hasidim

Representatives of the U.S. Jewish community emphasized that Uman holds special spiritual and historical significance for the global Bratslav Hasidic community.

Every year, pilgrims from various countries come to the city to visit the burial site of Rabbi Nachman. This pilgrimage is an important part of the cultural and religious heritage of the Bratslav Hasidim.

According to the meeting participants, such visits also promote intercultural dialogue and strengthen humanitarian ties between Ukraine and Jewish communities around the world.

The parties paid special attention to historic burial sites and memorial areas associated with the tragic chapters in the history of Uman’s Jewish community.

Decisions must comply with Ukrainian legislation

Ivan Verbytskyy briefed the delegation on the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine’s approaches to preserving cultural heritage, particularly historic cemeteries, burial sites, and memorial sites.

He emphasized that all decisions in this area must be made in accordance with current Ukrainian legislation.

In doing so, it is necessary to take into account not only the historical and religious significance of these sites, but also the interests of the local community and the need to preserve memory for future generations.

Consultations will continue

Following the meeting, the parties expressed their willingness to continue consultations and coordinate further actions to protect sites of remembrance in Uman.

The cooperation will focus on the preservation of Jewish cemeteries, historic burial sites, memorial areas, and other sensitive historical and cultural sites.

Further dialogue should help identify solutions that comply with Ukrainian law, ensure adequate protection of cultural heritage, and take into account the interests of the Uman community and the global Jewish community.
