Hasidic pilgrims have begun arriving in the Cherkasy region to celebrate the Jewish New Year—Rosh Hashanah—which is being observed in October this year. This was reported by the press service of the State Migration Service of Ukraine.
“Today, Andriy Kocherga, head of the Central-Southern Interregional Directorate of the State Migration Service, paid a working visit to the city of Uman. Together with employees of the Uman Division of the Central-Southern Interregional Directorate of the State Migration Service, he visited the neighborhood where the Hasidim live, the grave of the founder of Bratslav Hasidism, Tzadik Nachman, and, with the participation of representatives from the Uman District Police Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the region and the Strategic Investigations Directorate in Cherkasy Oblast of the National Police of Ukraine, discussed joint measures. “The main focus of the meeting was on security measures for foreign pilgrims and monitoring their compliance with legislation regarding the legal status of foreigners and stateless persons,” the statement reads.
The Migration Service noted that nearly 500 Hasidim have already arrived in Uman, but a mass arrival of pilgrims is expected starting next week. In light of this, the Migration Service, together with law enforcement agencies, has switched to an enhanced operational mode.
This year, Rosh Hashanah celebrations are expected to draw more than 50,000 pilgrims.
As a reminder, Rosh Hashanah will be observed October 2–4 this year.
