In Uman, in the Cherkasy region, special entry and movement restrictions have been implemented due to the arrival of Hasidic pilgrims for Rosh Hashanah. This was announced by Ihor Taburets, head of the Cherkasy Regional State Administration.
As of today, more than 1,500 pilgrims have already arrived.
“Uman. Starting today, special entry/exit and city movement protocols are in effect. The control procedures are essentially the same as last year. We have made some technical improvements. Our security and defense forces are operating on high alert. Despite the warnings, we already have more than 1,500 pilgrims as of today,” Taburets noted.
He explained that the entire set of measures is being implemented for the safety of local residents and visitors. He therefore urged everyone to be understanding of the restrictions.
As a reminder, since early September, Hasidic pilgrims have been arriving in the Cherkasy region to celebrate the Jewish New Year—Rosh Hashanah—which will be observed in October of this year.
Earlier, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs appealed to Hasidic pilgrims to refrain from making the pilgrimage to Uman during this year’s Rosh Hashanah celebrations.
It should be noted that security measures in Uman will be stepped up for Rosh Hashanah. In 2024, the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, will begin on the evening of October 2 and end on the evening of October 4.
