{"id":2167,"date":"2023-07-16T18:40:18","date_gmt":"2023-07-16T15:40:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umantravel.com\/?page_id=2167"},"modified":"2026-08-21T22:14:01","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T19:14:01","slug":"pilgrimage","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/umantravel.com\/en\/pilgrimage\/","title":{"rendered":"Pilgrimage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A pilgrimage is fundamentally different from the kind of tourism everyone is familiar with, as it is a journey undertaken by believers to visit places that are sacred to them.<\/p>\n<p>After Hasidism\u2014a movement within Judaism\u2014emerged in Ukraine in the 18th century, Hasidim began visiting the graves of their spiritual leaders\u2014the tzadikim and rabbis. The tradition of pilgrimage during major holidays, such as Rosh Hashanah, as well as throughout the year to sites of significance to Hasidim, has been preserved to this day. During these pilgrimages, believers honor the memory of their spiritual leaders through prayer and fulfill their legacies.<\/p>\n<p>With each passing year of Ukraine\u2019s independence, the number of Hasidim eager to go on pilgrimage has only increased. Today, there are several cities in our country that Hasidim travel to. Among the most popular is, of course, Uman, where up to 30,000<br \/>\nHasidim gather every year in early fall to celebrate the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah.<\/p>\n<p>Other popular Hasidic pilgrimage sites in Ukraine include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bratslav, where the grave of Rabbi Nathan Sternberg is located;<\/li>\n<li>Gadyach\u2014the center of pilgrimage for Lubavitcher Hasidim, also known as Chabadniks\u2014followers of the Chabad movement founded by Shneur Zalman;<\/li>\n<li>Medzhybizh\u2014here, visitors go to the Medzhybizh Synagogue and the necropolis at the ancient cemetery, where Baal Shem Tov, a follower of Tzadik Nachman, is buried.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hasidim also travel to Mukachevo, Belz, Berdichev, and Sadhora.<\/p>\n<p>For Hasidim, pilgrimage is a fundamental principle of their spiritual beliefs.
